Ideal for EVs

The Bush Winch was not designed specifically for EVs. But the characteristics of an electric motor make it the ideal power source.

A combustion engine produces torque in a narrow rev range and requires the driver of a manual gearbox vehicle to manage throttle, clutch and wheel spin simultaneously. An automatic gearbox vehicle has limitations too. An EV motor delivers its full torque output from the moment you touch the accelerator — smoothly, immediately, and with complete precision at low speed. For the Bush Winch that is exactly what you want. Small inputs produce controlled, consistent wheel rotation at the same time as the winch rope is winding up on the drum.

Tesla’s AWD system adds a further advantage. With both winch drums fitted — one to each side of the same axle — the rope under tension registers with the traction control system as having traction, keeping power directed to those wheels. Whether the drums are on the front or rear axle, and whether winching forward or backward, makes no difference.

A brief setting change is all that is needed before you start. Slip Start (available on all Tesla models via Controls → Pedals & Steering) permits the initial wheel rotation needed to take up the rope. On dual-motor AWD models, Off-Road Assist provides the same benefit with added torque balancing between the two motors. Once the rope is taut and the recovery is underway, both settings have done their job and the vehicle manages the rest.
